“The road to recovery showed me how much work remained to be done—and how many people could benefit if research, education, and access moved forward together.”Prentice Capri McGhee · Founder and President
FOUNDER’S STORY
In 2012, Prentice Capri McGhee suffered a mini stroke that resulted in facial muscle weakness. During the long road to recovery, he experienced firsthand the physical and personal effects of impaired facial function—and the limited tools available for structured facial rehabilitation.
He recognized a striking gap: resistance equipment existed for nearly every major muscle group in the body, but no comparable system had been developed specifically for facial muscles. That observation became the starting point for a prototype intended to help restore control.
Over more than a decade, McGhee pursued research, invention, testing, and multidisciplinary collaboration. His personal recovery remained at the center of that work: a reminder that rehabilitation is not an abstract technical problem, but a human journey affecting communication, expression, confidence, participation, and quality of life.
WHY THE INSTITUTE EXISTS
The Institute was created to carry this work beyond one person, one product, or one diagnosis. Its charitable mission is to improve human health through scientific research, healthcare education, clinical collaboration, rehabilitation science, and community outreach.
Its scope includes stroke, facial paralysis, neuromuscular recovery, ENT and airway health, sleep apnea, TMJ, speech and swallowing, muscle and bone health, healthy aging, preventive care, and future biomedical innovation.
The intended beneficiaries include patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, students, educators, underserved communities, and the public.
A PUBLIC-BENEFIT COMMITMENT
